I have been in the field of Early Childhood Education for 36 years, and this book brought back so many tender memories. As a former Preschool teacher, I can remember feeling overwhelmed at times and yet also so thankful for the opportunity to help impact the projected path for our youngest learners. Darlene Northam, a native of Portsmouth, VA, received her early education in the Portsmouth Public School system. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and continued her at Tidewater Community College. There she received associate degrees in early childhood and education/General Studies. Darlene’s thirst for knowledge drew her to Norfolk State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies and a Master’s in Pre-Elementary Education.

As an educator for over two-plus decades, Darlene has utilized her passion for transforming the lives of young people by serving them in various institutional settings. She has worked with third and fourth graders as a SOL remediation tutor in Math. In addition, Darlene has taught students in the private Christian school setting, daycare, and Head Start. She also held the position of principal in her desire to impact more lives than those in the classroom. As well, Darlene has held positions as an afterschool and daycare director. Darlene has taught not only in Virginia but also in the state of South Carolina.

Darlene is proud of her accomplishments as a mentor and 2010 Teacher of The Year. Her most recent achievement is that of author for her book, You Are Not Just A Teacher, You Are So Much More! With all that Darlene has achieved, she is a down-to-earth, personable, transparent individual who loves people. Her affection for seeing educators thrive and become all God has purposed for them is always at the forefront of her heart. As a means of helping them accomplish this, Darlene provides professional development, motivational speeches, and training. She also does workshops, teacher retreats and offers individualized teacher mentorship.
